Analyze Your Emotions

Emotions can be really ugly to feel when the going gets tough. It's sometimes dehumanizing to experience harsh feelings and the knee-jerk reaction is to distract yourself from them.

I want to invite you to an alternative: Write what's going on, and get discrete analysis of your emotions and advice that helps you how to view these emotions in a more human way.

How does it work?

Emotions give you important information about how you interact with the world. They are:

  • Sources of information - your developed brain's intuitive signals about what's important to you
  • Sources of motivation - they push you toward or away from action

Even when you push aside an emotion, it can still be active in your brain, shaping:

  • • Your habits
  • • Your avoidance patterns
  • • Your motivation
  • • Your beliefs about yourself and the world

Numbing emotions does not make them disappear. It makes them dormant, and dormant emotions still program your brain. Often involuntary in maladaptive ways.

When you take the time to process your emotions, you can:

  • • Understand what they are telling you
  • • Choose a wise response aligned with your values
  • • Break free from the cycle of avoidance and suppression

1) What's happening?

Best prompts are specific: Write about the situation you experienced and what your reaction was to it. This tool works best with your authentic personal reflections.
